Concerns raised about loss of day centres in Holmewood and Bierley

Tong Ward community campaigner Matt Edwards has expressed concern after it was announced by Bradford Council that Listonshiels Resource Centre, in Bierley, and Grove Resource Centre in Holmewood have both been earmarked for closure.

Bradford Council has said that following their closure, the properties will be transferred to the Council’s Asset Management Service.

The council will then ensure that there is no other requirements for the facility before agreeing to “dispose” of the sites.

Matt Edwards has said, “This is another worrying development for the communities living in BD4.

“Day centres are a vital lifeline for elderly and vulnerable adults. It gives them somewhere to go and gets them out of their homes.

“We have already seen community facilities lost across Holmewood and Bierley and I really want to know how they plan to give “community based support” when the facilities that offer these services are already stretched.

“Bradford Council really needs to keep local people in the loop about what is happening with these sites. We can’t afford to see more council buildings left empty only to become targets for vandalism and arson like Holme View Care Home.”

According to a report by ITV News, the number of Adult day centres has dropped by 41% across England between 2010 and 2018, while funding allocated to the service has fallen by 30% over the same period.
