Councillor Matt Edwards, the leader of the Green Party on Bradford Council, has responded to the latest Conservative budget that offers little for most people in Bradford.

Councillor Matt Edwards stood with his arms crossed in front of Bradford City Hall.Councillor Edwards said, “Bradford has suffered under fourteen years of economic mismanagement by this Conservative government. Our district needs investment in public services but all this government had to offer was a tax bribe that benefits the richest 1%.

“Public services across the country are struggling. NHS waits are getting longer, dentists can’t be found, while anyone travelling by train or bus, or visiting our town centres feels the lack of investment all around them.

“There was no mention of extra support for local councils that would help Bradford avoid devastating cuts to local services. All the Chancellor offered was the empty talk of increased ‘productivity’ without any detail on what that actually means. Bradford – indeed the whole country - deserves better.

“In the run up to this budget, the Green Party have proposed more funding for public services and a proper green investment programme paid for through a wealth tax on the multi-millionaires and billionaires. We need an economy where everyone pays their fair share and the super wealthy have been let off the hook for too long.”

Bradford Green Party called on both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition to back a ceasefire in Gaza saying “silence is complicity”

Matt Edwards, Leader of the Green Group on Bradford Council said:

“The loss of human life in this conflict is heartbreaking. The terrorist attacks by Hamas on 7th October were brutal and deplorable. So too is the response of the Israeli armed forces which has seen 10,000 people killed. Every person killed, whether Israeli or Palestinian is a tragedy.

“There are 2.3 million people living in Gaza, half of them children. Hamas is still holding hundreds of civilians hostage. Everything must be done to end this conflict and stop the senseless loss of life.

“It’s clear that the only way to end this conflict is an immediate ceasefire and the opening of a humanitarian corridor.

“The UK still has a lot of influence on the global stage and it must use this to  join international calls for an immediate ceasefire. It is shameful that both the Prime Minister and Sir Keir Starmer, who is a human rights lawyer, have refused to condemn the appalling humanitarian crisis unfolding.”

Carla Denyer, the national co-leader of the Green Party has already written to the UK government and the official opposition urging them to "listen to the people” and join international calls for a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict."

She said:

“The mass civilian suffering we have seen in Israel and Gaza has shocked the world. Over 700 civilians are being killed every day, one child every ten minutes. The dire humanitarian situation is clearly intolerable and must end.

“We cannot hear arguments about violence now somehow preventing further violence in future without shuddering. The lives of children cannot be bartered in this way.

“We are deeply concerned that neither the UK government nor the official opposition has joined international calls for a ceasefire. It is with deep regret that the Green Party feels the need to point out that at times like these, silence is complicity.

“We urge both the government and the Labour Party to listen to the British people, three-quarters of whom want an immediate ceasefire.

Following the announcement that Bradford Council faces an overspend of £68m in the coming year, the Leader of the Green Party Group on Bradford Council said:

"We can't get around the fact this announcement today is bad news for taxpayers in Bradford. We have had many years of significant Council Tax rises whilst every day services many of us use have been significantly cut. Today's announcement is going to mean even more cuts to service.

"Last year, in his pitch to Conservative Party members, this Prime Minister bragged about diverting funds from Northern Councils - like Bradford - to wealthy, mostly Conservative-controlled council's down South. The announcement today really needs to be seen in that context.

“Whilst poor decisions have been made over the last twelve years by the current Labour administration, Bradford is not alone in facing this financial pressure.

"We really need the government needs to lift its head out of the sand and deliver a funding settlement for local councils that allows us to provide the services tax payers need – and deserve.”

An apology from Yorkshire Water’s chief executive over sewage discharges is not good enough according to Green Party councillors on Bradford Council who say they should be apologising for charging people for services they failed to deliver

Nicola Shaw apologisedAn open sewer discharging into a local river because Yorkshire Water had “taken too long” to produce a plan to tackle sewage being discharged into the county’s waters. The apology also included details of investment to modernise the sewer network but Greens have pointed out that this will be paid for by households through higher bills.

Councillor Celia Hickson (Tong Ward), the Deputy Leader of the Green Party Group said,

“After decades of failing to tackle the issue of dumping raw sewage into our district's rivers, this apology is way too little and far too late.

“And what’s worse, it is actually hiding the real announcement that households across Yorkshire are going to foot the huge bill for fixing the mess Yorkshire Water have got us into.

“For decades, Yorkshire Water has failed to properly invest in our infrastructure whilst funnelling their profits to their shareholders - which are mainly made up of international banks.

“Households across the country are struggling with rising bills and now they are going to be hit by rising water bills. This isn’t a cost of living crisis, it is a cost of greed crisis and it is families across Yorkshire who will be paying to clean up our rivers - not the government or the business who got us into this situation. This is not right”.

Councillor Janet Russell wearing a pink coat standing with a view of countryside between Silsden and Addingham in the vackground. There is a blue sky with a few clouds. The Green Party is now the third largest party on Bradford Council with eight councillors following gains in recent local elections - including the election of Councillor Janet Russell in the Craven Ward which stretches across both the Aire and Wharfe valleys.

Councillor Russell said,

“The media focus on this scandal has meant residents are rightly worried about the damage that Yorkshire Water has done to our district's two main rivers.

“The apology Ms Shaw has issued should be one to every single water bill payer because we have been paying for a service we haven’t received - and now Yorkshire Water want us to pay them a second time.

“It is the government that needs to act here - they need to force the water companies to foot much more of the bill and give the regulators the powers to keep proper tabs on them.”

Figures from campaign group ‘Top of the Poops’ have shown that raw sewage was pumped into the River Aire 3,571 sewage times in 2021 - the highest number of any river in Great Britain.

The Deputy Leader of the Green Party and England and Wales visit Bradford District to join local campaigners for the upcoming local elections.

Zack Polanski, who is a member of the London Assembly, stopped in Bradford as part of a small tour of Yorkshire.

He joined Ros Brown and local campaigners in Ilkley, where the Greens finished less than 100 votes off the Conservative candidate in last year's elections.

He later travelled to Heaton, another closely contested ward where Khalid Mahmood finished just behind Labour in the lost elections.

Zack said, “It has been great to visit Bradford District today to see the amazing work local campaigners are doing right across the District.

“Last year the Greens doubled the number of councillors in Bradford District from three to six and this year the party is hoping for more big gains here.

“A vote for a Green Party candidate is a vote for the local community. Whether it’s speaking up for green space or pushing for action to make transport more affordable and accessible, having a Green in your community is someone who will be a vital person speaking out on behalf of residents.”

Councillor Matt Edwards, (Tong Ward) leader of the Green Party group on Bradford Council said, “We are the opposition to the big two parties here in Bradford.

“We are the only party challenging both Labour on how they run our Council and the Conservatives nationally for their mismanagement of our economy and public services.

“We have Councillors right across the District from Craven in the very North to Tong in the South and this year we are hoping to elect even more. Green councillors have a reputation for being hard working councillors and campaigners and it’s a record I am very proud of.

“As councillors we will continue to push for action to clean up our local environment, tackle fly tipping and rubbish issues and demand more support for community groups. We will also continue to hold our Labour-run council - especially on their failures to improve Children’s Services.”

A petition has been started calling on First Bus to reverse their cuts to the 508 bus service which connects Leeds City Centre with Halifax via the South of Bradford.

Councillor Matt Edwards standing at a bus stop with a single decker grey First Bus in the background approaching the bus stop. The petition was started by Councillor Matt Edwards, who represents Tong Ward and is also the Green Party’s national Transport spokesperson. The 508 runs along the edge of Tong Ward serving the Sutton Estate, Holmewood and Bierley.

Councillor Edwards said, “The communities in BD4 have some of the lowest rates of car ownership in Bradford and the 508 is an important connection to both Leeds and Halifax - without a 20 minute or more diversion into Bradford.

“As the cost of living has risen, buses offer an affordable way for people to get around without having to pay petrol and parking charges.

“It’s really disappointing that our privatised bus network is putting the profits of bus companies before running good quality, regular bus services. We should be expanding our bus network - not cutting it.“

Ursula Sutcliffe, who is the Green Party in Tong Ward in the local elections next month echoed the demand to reinstate more regular services.

“I don’t drive so for me buses are the easiest way for me to get around. I know people who use this service to get to the nearest supermarket or work, or their kids use it to get to school.

“This is going to add a lot of time to people’s journeys and mean people are either going miles out of their way, or sitting waiting around for buses.

“I really hope First listen to everyone that has signed this and reinstate the more frequent services.”

One resident from Holmewood who signed the petition said, “This bus service not only allows workers, pensions, and young people to easily get to Leeds or Halifax but to other places along  route such as Asda on Rooley Lane or Thornbury.

“Many people don't drive and rely on this service for many things like shopping, appointments, work and recreation amongst many other things.”

Councillor Edwards has also called on the Mayor of West Yorkshire to work with local councillors to demand First Bus reinstate the half hourly services. He added,

“The Mayor has made a big deal with the launch of her ‘Mayor’s Fare’ but cheaper tickets are no use whatsoever when the private bus operators are cutting services and making them unusable.

“We really need the Mayor to step in here and work with us to get First to reinstate regular services. These changes are already having an impact on people getting to work, college or even having social lives.”

A councillor has called on Bradford Council to take action on the owner of a prominent building in Holmewood - months after he was granted planning permission to demolish the building.

Councillor Matt Edwards standing outside the Holmewood Social Club, a 50s era brick building/ There is a large amount of waste dumped outside.Councillor Matt Edwards has called on Bradford Council to take action against the owner of the Holmewood Social Club for failing to keep the site clear of fly-tipping and illegally dumped waste.

Bradford Council’s Bradford Area Planning Panel granted planning permission to demolish the building and replace it with a food store in December last year. But the business that operated out of the building hasn’t reopened. The site has now fallen victim to substantial amounts of dumped waste.

Councillor Matt Edwards said, “This is exactly what I warned about back in December. The landowner has a track record for this sort of thing.

“This is the same man who has failed to look after the site of the former Tempest - another former pub in Holmewood. He got planning permission to build houses on that site back in 2018. Five years later there are still no houses and the entire site is an eyesore, I am very worried this will happen here as well.

“The Holmewood club was built originally for the people of the estate and the community fought to save this building. The way he has left this building to rot is an insult to them. He needs to get his act together and sort this out - and I will be on at Bradford Council’s Enforcement Team to keep on at him until he does.”

Bradford Council has agreed to demand that Yorkshire Water and the government do more to tackle sewage discharge into the district's rivers following Green Party proposals.

An open sewer discharging into a local riverThe motion, proposed by Councillor Celia Hickson (Tong Ward) called on the Chief Executive of Bradford Council to do more to hold Yorkshire Water to account following data that showed the water company had pumped sewage into the River Aire 4,085 times in 2021 - the highest number of any river in Great Britain.

In her speech, Councillor Hickson said, “Work by local groups such as Friends of Bradford Beck and the Aire Rivers Trust and local individuals such as the Urban Pollution Hunter, has highlighted the sustained overuse of combined sewer overflows, which is degrading our local river habitats causing fish and invertebrate deaths and river bed overgrowth with sewage fungus.

“In short, our water environment is in crisis. The regeneration of the City and redevelopment of Bradford Beck site alongside Canal Road are essential elements of growth of our local economy. But there is little point in this work if the water flowing through the beck is of low quality and the water environment is degraded and impoverished by sewage contamination.”

Conservative councillors attempted to water down proposals and strip away criticism of the government for their failure to better regulate the industry.

Responding Councillor Hickson said,

“Robbie Moore MP voted against the Lord’s amendment that would have placed a legal duty on water companies to make demonstrable improvements in our water system - rather than platitudes.

“Regulation requires enforcement. The Environment Agency is currently underfunded and under-resourced and hasn’t got enough staff to do the enforcement required to keep our rivers clean.”

Carla Denyer and Ros Brown talking to each other on the banks of the River Whatfe. There are a lot of trees on both sides of the river and a small suspension bridge in the background.Ilkley Town Councillor Ros Brown, who is standing for the Green Party in this years’ local elections said,

“Ilkley Clean River Group have worked incredibly hard and led the way nationally when it comes to cleaning up the River Wharfe and securing bathing status in Ilkley. They have also been leaders when it comes to campaigning for better regulation of water quality - despite the opposition from Conservative MPs.

“It is incredibly disappointing that instead of defending their party’s record, Conservative District Councillors in Ilkley have used their platform to make misleading comments about me in public.

“I have been very clear that Yorkshire Water needs to invest in improving water quality in Ilkley. But at the same time, they also need to make sure residents are kept informed about the progress of the current works on Ashlands Field and they need to compensate the school and our community for the loss of use during the works.

“It is strange that at the end of his speech, Councillor Loy said we needed a well-regulated water industry when his MP Robbie Moore voted against attempts by the House of Lords to better regulate the industry and has been very clear that he believes further regulation isn’t necessary.”

A popular local businesswoman has been selected by the Green Party as their candidate for Tong Ward.

Green Party members voted to select Ursula Sutcliffe, who owned and ran the popular plant shop and cafe ‘Plant One On Me' in Bradford City Centre until it closed last year.

Ursula has lived in Holmewood for nearly thirty years and has raised her family here. She has been a vocal campaigner for small business owners and has appeared on Sky News.

Ursula said, “It’s been great seeing the impact that Green Party councillors have had in the community I live in over the last few years. It feels like this part of Bradford had been forgotten about - but that is changing.

“Now I have more time, I want to spend more time making things better for the people in the area I live in.

“With ‘City of Culture’ coming to Bradford in a few years I want to make sure communities in the south of the city really get to see the benefits of that. But my top priority will be making sure there is more opportunity for young people growing up in this part of Bradford.”

The Green Party first won Tong Ward in 2021 and increased their vote share in 2022 when Celia Hickson was elected. Prior to then, the ward had elected Labour councillors for decades.

Councillor Matt Edwards, the first Green Party councillor for Tong Ward said, “I am absolutely delighted that Ursula has been selected by Green Party members to represent us in the upcoming election.

“I’m proud that, at the local level, Greens have started to change things for the residents of Bierley, Holmewood, Tong Village and all the other communities that make up the ward.

“It’s been great to see all the positive messages she has received since we made the announcement. Ursula has the passion and the determination to get things done for the area and I know she would make an excellent councillor.”

Local elections take place on May 4th this year.

Green Party councillors for Tong Ward have welcomed the re-opening of Holmewood Library.

A curved building with yellow painted wallsThe new library has been relocated within the recently refurbished TFD Centre on Broadstone Way. Initially, it will be open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm and run by volunteers.

Tong Ward’s Green Party councillors Matt Edwards and Celia Hickson have welcomed the reopening of the library.

Councillor Edwards said, “I am absolutely delighted that the Holmewood Library has finally reopened after being closed for nearly three years. The refurbished library is a great place for people to come and meet other people, access computers and borrow books.

“We are getting closer to re-establishing the TFD Centre as a real community hub in the heart of Holmewood.

However, Green councillors have raised concerns about the short opening hours and have pledged to look for ways to extend this,

Councillor Edwards added, “Four hours a day, three days a week is not good enough really.

“Other libraries across Bradford are open for much longer. We have already had people contact us wanting to see the library open after schools for kids and that is something we are working on.”

The library has been closed since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic.
A petition was started in 2016 to Save Holmewood Library after a budget set by the Labour-run council voted to cut staffing at the library completely. Since then the library has been run by volunteers.

Tong Ward Councillors have asked Bradford Council to use leftover government funding as part of Well Bradford which was allocated to Holmewood to fund a new Community Development Officer role.

Councillor Celia Hickson said, “Before Bradford Council cut staffing at the library this was used by nearly a thousand people a week. It is more than just a place to get books but it is a vital community hub where people can access a whole host of council services.

“Communities like Holmewood really need places like this and I am glad that we, as Tong Ward councillors, have been able to secure funding for a new job, which will be managed by the Sutton Centre, to help make it easier for the community to access the new facilities in the library and the TFD.”
